Gas Powertrain
Gas grades use a 2.0-liter Dynamic Force four-cylinder producing 169 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque, paired with a Dynamic Shift continuously variable transmission. That transmission uses a physical launch gear for start-off acceleration before handing off to the pulley system, which gives it a more linear feel than a conventional CVT. All gas grades are front-wheel drive.
Hybrid Powertrain
Hybrid grades pair a 1.8-liter four-cylinder with the fifth-generation Toyota Hybrid System for 138 net combined horsepower and 105 lb-ft of torque. Electronic On-Demand All-Wheel Drive, available on Hybrid LE and Hybrid SE, adds a separate rear-mounted electric motor that engages when the front wheels slip and helps reduce understeer through corners. The gap between the two powertrains is widest in city driving. The Hybrid LE’s EPA-estimated city rating is 21 mpg higher than the gas LE’s. On the highway the EPA-estimated difference narrows to 5 mpg, because the gasoline engine does most of the work at sustained speed. It earned Good or better in seven of them, including both front crash prevention tests, and Marginal in the updated moderate overlap front test, where rear-passenger chest measures and restraint behavior fell short. IIHS notes that the updated moderate overlap front rating applies to the gas sedan and does not cover the hybrid variant. The Corolla did not receive a Top Safety Pick award for 2026.
